Prophylaxis – Routine Cleaning

Caring for your smile takes more than just daily brushing and flossing at home. Routine professional cleanings and checkups are a vital element in protecting your oral health. At Village Dental Care, we focus on the importance of preventative care for our patients. Staying on top of your oral health can prevent major tooth and gum issues, catching small issues before they become larger dental or medical health problems.

Root Planing/Curettage

Root planing is used to clean the parts of teeth, which are below the gum-line and cannot be reached with a toothbrush. This can result in gum disease and gum ‘pockets’ can start to develop around the teeth. This means that the bone supporting the teeth can become lost. Root planing is used to clean out the gum ‘pockets’ and remove plaque and tartar from the tooth roots.

Deep Cleaning

Deep cleaning is taking the bacteria off of the root of your tooth and is also cleaning the inside of the gum area that touches the root. By cleaning both of these areas and letting them heal tightly back together, the pockets are reduced and your tooth can get back to being healthy! We the may place medicine or antibiotic directly in specific areas to help eradicate infection and bacteria. This is a wonderful new advancement in the treatment of periodontal disease!

Oral Examinations

During a dental exam, we will also ask about any health problems you have or medications you’re taking and discuss how they might affect your oral health. If you have diabetes, for example, you’re at increased risk of gum disease. Any medication that contributes to dry mouth can increase your risk of tooth decay. If arthritis interferes with your ability to effectively brush your teeth, your dentist or hygienist might show you how to insert the handle of your toothbrush into a rubber ball for easier use — or recommend a powered or electric toothbrush. Our Dental exams might also include counseling about diet, use of tobacco products and other lifestyle factors that can affect oral health.

Restorative – Fillings

Teeth are held in the jaw by their roots, which have nerves inside of them. When there is decay or an injury, it can cause the root to die, which can result in an abscess at the end of the tooth. Root fillings involve removing damaged or dead nerves and filling the space. This allows us to repair the tooth that is left.

Crowns

Crowns are tooth coverings that enclose the entire tooth surface. This covering restores the tooth to its natural size and shape. This type of restoration strengthens and protects the remaining tooth structure that otherwise would not be able to be restored with any other type of restoration; such as fillings, inlays, onlays, or veneers. Porcelain crowns are the preferential choice of material; however gold and precious metal crowns are available.

Bridges

Bridges are usually made of a precious metal. If the bridge will show, porcelain is then bonded to the base. Sometimes, there are other non-precious metals used in the base for strength. Although a bridge may seem costly they can be a wise investment that will give many years of good service. It will also improve your appearance and bite. A bridge uses the considerable skill of the dentist and technician, and in this way, it’s similar to ordering a piece of hand-made jewelry.

Space Maintainers

Space maintainers help “hold space” for permanent teeth. Your child may need one if he or she loses a baby tooth prematurely, before the permanent tooth is ready to erupt. If a primary tooth is lost too early, adult teeth can erupt into the empty space instead of where they should be. When more adult teeth are ready to come into the mouth, there may not be enough room for them because of the lost space. To prevent this from happening, the dentist may recommend a space maintainer to hold open the space left by the missing tooth.

Dentures

Dentures are a removable dental appliance used to replace missing teeth; they closely resemble your natural teeth. They do not only help your ability to chew but they also help support lips, cheeks, and they correct the collapsed look that occurs with missing teeth. Another key advantage is that it helps in speech; having the support of the lips, cheeks, and the contact with the tongue helps patients better enunciate and pronounce words.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal treatment involves the removal of the pulp tissues from the tooth in the event that it gets infected or inflamed. The pulp can be infected or inflamed due to either deep decay or an extensive restoration that involves the pulp, cracked or fractured tooth due to trauma, excessive wear of enamel and dentine exposing the pulp, and sometimes as a result of severe gum disease.

Signs of pulp damage may include pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, discoloration of the tooth, swelling, tenderness of the overlying gums or a bad taste in the mouth. On the other hand, there may be no symptoms at all. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can eventually cause pain, swelling and loss of the supporting bone.

Extractions

When your dentist refers to the term extraction, it simply means to take a tooth of your mouth. This may be necessary if a tooth is very decayed, damaged or has become loose due to gum disease.

Sometimes children’s teeth are taken out to give new or remaining teeth enough room to grow.
